The different types of transport
Did you know that truck transport represents approximately 90% of national freight traffic? Truck transportation is essential for logistics to run smoothly, but there are many types of transportation methods.
In this article, we outline the different types of truck transportation and the key points to consider when choosing the transportation method.
Types of road transport
This article discusses typical trucking methods and their characteristics.
■ Charter service
This is a mode of transportation in which an entire vehicle is chartered or reserved for rental.
Goods from a single shipper are loaded and the vehicle goes directly from the origin to the destination. This is the most suitable mode of transport for products that cannot be mixed with other goods, when you want to reduce delivery times or when you want to ensure that products are delivered on the scheduled date and time.
Charter services do not mix products from multiple delivery destinations, reducing the risk of erroneous deliveries to other destinations. It is also a mode of transport that minimizes the risk of transshipment of products during delivery, or the risk of products of different shapes coming into contact with each other and being damaged.
■ Route delivery
A method of transportation in which a driver and vehicle are dedicated to a single shipper and deliveries are made to multiple fixed delivery destinations at specified delivery dates and times.
As deliveries are made on a fixed route and at a fixed time, it is the ideal solution for deliveries to destinations with strictly defined delivery dates and times. As it is a specialized delivery service, the driver knows the product characteristics and delivery conditions, which can effectively avoid problems at the delivery location.
Common delivery service
Joint delivery is an efficient way to transport products from multiple shippers to the same delivery address by combining their products.
The number of trucks used for the entire transport can be reduced, thereby reducing CO2 emissions and affirming that it is an environmentally friendly method of transport.
Loading volume
First of all, choose the most suitable mode of transport depending on the quantity of goods you want to transport. For example, if you want to transport small batches of products less than a truckload, you can reduce transportation costs by using a route service or joint delivery rather than a chartered service. In addition, if you are dealing with products whose transportation volume fluctuates greatly depending on the season, it is advisable to choose a mode of transportation whose pricing structure is adapted to the volume of the cargo.
Delivery conditions specified by destination
Delivery terms can be specified by the destination, for example, goods must be delivered on pallets or in bulk, for example, by crate. If delivery conditions are specified, using an exclusive charter service or route service that delivers on a fixed route will ensure trouble-free delivery, as transportation can be entrusted to a driver who knows the conditions of the delivery destination.
For destinations with very strict delivery dates and times, a charter service that travels directly to the delivery location is also a reliable option.
